Prior to this, she held various roles at London South Bank University, including Director of Research & Enterprise and Director of Education & Student Experience. Led University wide initiatives in research & enterprise and learning & teaching. As an undergraduate she was awarded a BSc (Hons) degree in Life Sciences. She holds a PhD from the Faculty of Medicine (Institute of Dermatology), University of London. Her academic training has enabled her to lead multi-disciplinary research in computing. Has worked with industry, for example, in media, technology, music and manufacturing, on applied research projects to enable companies to exploit new concepts and technologies, and maintain a competitive advantage. As a researcher, she collaborates with international partners on research projects and knowledge valorisation.
As part of Shushma’s portfolio, she is responsible for student experience, working with the DSU and all colleagues across the university to enhance the engagement and experience for all DMU students.
Shushma is passionate about promoting equality, diversity and inclusion. She has actively promoted women in STEM and leadership and is currently an ally for the DMU LGBTQ+ network. She is a Chartered IT Professional, Fellow of the British Computer Society, a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a National Teaching Fellow and a QAA Quality and Standards Reviewer.
On a personal level Shushma enjoys visiting the theatre, art galleries, travelling, baking and spending time with her family.
